Sabalo System –> Restart.

Well… I’m not quite done yet. I’m still working on the restart. I mean… I wake up and expect to have things to do. I mean… I DO have things to do, but they’re not the same things I’m used to doing… or… hell. If you get it, you get it. If not, well, you’ve not been between jobs in a good long while.

Me? I’ve not been truly between jobs since 2004.

First interview? Scheduled, so that’s good. I’m spending the day finding solid opportunities, crafting a better resume, and watching that “To Catch a Thief” show.

I mean, uh… being productive for a full 12 hour day.

So, here’s your opportunity. What do you think I’d be good at? What job should I be doing? I can’t guarantee that I’ll take you seriously, but I’ll at least READ all of the ideas.

Eh, I understand. Business is business. Still, I’m out of a job that I really dug. That always stings.

So what now? I don’t know yet. I’ve been looking and applying elsewhere (I am not one to waste time) but I’m sort of wondering if I’m not done with this IT thing. Now isn’t the time to decide that, though. I’ll give it some thought over the next few days, see where I want to go with it.

Anyway. If I seem sullen and depressed, smack me.

It looks like I’m going to be looking for a new job.

I got a call this afternoon to let me know that my company’s office down this way would be closing. After two years, the revenue has been pretty much nil and they’ve decided to cut their losses. I can’t say that I blame them, either… the fact that it has stayed open so long is impressive… and I appreciate that I’ve been able to work for an awesome company for so long. Alas, it is over tomorrow.

Though… I still get paid for another month, so there’s that.

Now, though, I need to decide what I want to do. With a month to find something (and I had a hit this evening that may end up not panning out) I’m not feeling the pressure, but I’d be lying if I said I was particularly pleased.I suppose part of that is simply not enjoying the feeling of getting dumped.

I’ll know more tomorrow, but I don’t expect I’ll know a whole lot more than what I already know. No job, sorry about that, here’s some money and a free lunch. We’ll call you when there’s work down this way if you like, pay you contract rates.

A shame, really. I liked my company. But I understand why they need to do what they’re doing.

I’m back up to 5.5 miles, with 6 planned for Saturday. That will put me back where I was when I failed out, which means I can consider anything beyond that point progress. The farthest I’ve ever done in one sitting (standing) is eight, so after 8 I’ll be in new territory.

Yeah, I have nothin’.

So… what did I do? Simple enough. I used my ballot as one might use a gas station wall. With my finger (I’d love to pretend it was my middle finger, but alas) I filled in Nathan Explosion, Charles Ofdenson, myself, J, Nottingham (for Sheriff), and commented on the race itself by filling in “these guys are all dildos.”

Immature? Yeah, maybe. But it was amusing and pretty much sums up my contempt for the entire process. You know what the best part is, though? No matter who the rest of my local contacts voted for, they accomplished exactly as much as I did.

Fuck all.

At least I didn’t have to swallow my pride and my principles to click the pretty touchscreen. I call that a win.

I finally received my HDX laptop today, after literal weeks of waiting, customs delays, and annoyances all around. I could not be more pleased with my purchase; the laptop is even better than I thought it would be and runs Windows 7 flawlessly. I’m currently running through the ever-fun process of getting all of my apps up to speed again, which (despite a network hitch) has gone pretty smooth for what it is.

Complaints? None. None at all. I’m not looking forward to setting up iTunes (I’d dump it if anything else synced my iPhone properly) but other than that I’m just about set. Setting up iTunes is bound to be a crap sandwich. Ah well.

As for the name, my new devices have been decidedly Norse. Munnin, my iPhone, is now complemented by Huginn, the HDX. As they are my connection with the sum total of human knowledge, I felt it appropriate to name them after what were essentially Odin’s search engines.

As for Tyche? Predictably, she threw a fit this morning and burned out her power supply. Perhaps it was chance… or perhaps she was sentient and didn’t like that I was dumping her for a hot new dish. We’ve made up, though… she’s serving as a temporary media server before heading into a gracious retirement to the spares closet.

And that, folks, was pretty much my day. Squee-worthy new gear, followed by a whole lot of setting up said gear.

Anyway.

This weekend was actually pretty awesome. Despite literal last minute cancellations on Friday (we’re talking cancellations at 4:57p as I was literally starting the car to drive to DC) the weekend turned out well. As I may have mentioned once or twice, Jennie and I headed to the beltway to see Mastodon & Dethklok, live. The concert was, in a word, awesome. I was going to bitch about the lack of a real bar, but it turned out well overall. If we can manage it, we might even try to go when they hit the Norva.

My ears should have stopped ringing by then.
